Gutter cleaning in Christchurch: when, why, and what happens if you don't
What blocked gutters actually do
Gutters fail quietly. Leaves build up, water starts overflowing the back edge, and months later you've got rotted fascia boards, stained soffits, damp creeping into wall framing, or a winter downpour dumping straight onto the foundations. Birds and pests love a full gutter too. The repair bill is always a multiple of what a clean would have cost.
The General's timing rule: after the storms, and again in spring
Andy's field rule is simple:
- After any big storm: a decent blow fills gutters with leaves, twigs and grit in one afternoon, so it's always worth a check, whatever the season.
- After the winter storms (late winter): the big clear-out, once the weather has thrown everything it's going to at the roof.
- Again in spring: confirms downpipes are running free and catches the spring seed-and-blossom drop before summer.
Once a year is the bare minimum for most homes. Under big deciduous trees, treat twice as standard. Think Fendalton, Merivale, Cashmere, Ilam.
DIY or hire it out?
Honest answer: single-storey with a good ladder, a steady mate and no fear of muck, you can DIY it. But ladder falls are one of NZ's most common home-injury causes, and two-storey gutters, steep sections or brittle roofs aren't worth the risk. A pro clean is quick, includes downpipe flushing, and the debris leaves the property instead of sitting in a pile by the fence.
While the ladder's up
Gutter day is the cheapest time to bundle roofline jobs: a roof moss treatment, a look at loose fixings, or a house wash. One visit, several jobs off the list.
