Timing, and when to stop DIYing
Any settled, still, dry stretch works, though treating before the wet season means winter rain does the clearing for you. Avoid windy days, since overspray drifts onto gardens. As for doing it yourself: roofs are the single most dangerous surface on a property. Steep pitch, brittle old tiles, wet moss underfoot and a two-storey drop are not worth saving a few dollars over. Trim back overhanging branches while you are at it, because shade is what invites the moss back. That is a trimming job worth doing at the same time.
