How often should you mow your lawn in Christchurch?
The Canterbury mowing calendar
Christchurch lawns don't grow at one speed. They sprint in spring and crawl in winter. As a rule of thumb:
- September – December: the spring flush. Every 1–2 weeks; weekly if it's warm and wet.
- January – February: depends on the nor'westers. Dry summers slow growth: every 2–3 weeks, and don't cut too short.
- March – May: steady autumn growth. Fortnightly keeps it tidy.
- June – August: slow. Every 3–4 weeks on a dry day is plenty.
Height matters more than frequency
The classic mistake is scalping the lawn to stretch time between mows. Cutting more than a third of the blade at once stresses the grass, invites weeds and browns off in the first dry spell. A slightly longer lawn shades its own roots, holds moisture through Canterbury's dry snaps, and stays greener for it.
Overgrown? Don't scalp it in one go
Knee-high grass after a busy summer or between tenants needs staging: a high first cut, then progressively lower over a mow or two. Hacking it to the dirt in one pass shocks the lawn and leaves you with straw. (This staged rescue is bread and butter for a lawn mowing round. No lawn is too far gone.)
Clippings: catch or mulch?
Light, frequent mows can mulch clippings back in as free fertiliser. Heavy or wet cuts want catching and removing, because clumps smother the grass underneath. If green waste is piling up faster than the bin can take it, a tip run clears the backlog.
One more thing: watch for grass grub
If patches of your lawn brown off and lift like loose carpet in late summer or autumn, mowing isn't your problem. Grass grub is, and Canterbury is prime country for it. It has its own briefing: grass grub in Christchurch lawns: signs and what to do.
