Spring garden prep checklist for Christchurch
Start in August, not October
The temptation is to wait for the first genuinely warm weekend, by which point the weeds have a month's head start. Late winter is when the useful work happens: cutting back, clearing, feeding and preparing, so that when growth does kick off, the garden is ready rather than being rescued.
The order of operations
- Clear and cut back: dead growth, spent perennials, anything that collapsed over winter.
- Weed properly, once: get them out while the soil is soft and before they seed. This one job saves the most work all season.
- Prune what wants pruning now: many summer-flowering shrubs and roses want a late-winter cut. Anything that flowers on old wood should wait until after it has flowered.
- Feed and mulch: compost or fertiliser, then mulch on top. Mulch holds moisture through the nor'west dry spells later and suppresses the weeds you just removed.
- Tidy the edges: crisp bed edges make an average garden look properly maintained.
The late-frost trap
Christchurch gets frosts well into spring, and a warm September week fools people every year. Tender seedlings planted too early get flattened by a clear night. Hold the frost-sensitive plants until the risk has genuinely passed, usually well into October, and keep something handy to cover them if a cold clear night is forecast. Hardy stuff, bulbs and structural planting can go in much earlier.
